Zimerman’s protest.

Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman shocked the audience of LA Walt Disney Concert Hall on Sunday when he stopped mid-show saying that he would no longer perform in a country whose military wants to take over the world.

According to the report on the Los Angeles Times website, Zimerman was about to play the final piece of the evening – Polish composer Karol Szymanowski’s ‘Variations on a Polish Folk Theme’ – when he suddenly stopped playing and came out with a politicized speech accusing the US of attempting to press the rest of the world with their military policy.

“Get your hands off my country,” he said, referring to the US plans to place an ABM shield in Poland.

Some might criticize him for his boycott and label his act as an inappropriateness. I think, however, if a musician or an artist has political statement, there is hardly more appropriate occasion than on a stage to tell his message and he has a right to do so. In this case, his action has much stronger influence than any other because of its “inappropriateness”. After all most of people never want to think about politics at a classic consert.

ロサンジェルスのウォルト・ディズニー・コンサートホールで行われた演奏会にてポーランド人ピアニストのクリスティアン・ツィマーマンが「軍事力で世界を支配しようとする国で演奏をする気は今後もうありません。」と言い演奏を途中で止めた時、観客は大きなショックを受けました。

ロサンジェルス・タイムズのウェブサイトによると、彼が突然演奏を止めて米国の他国に対する強制的な軍事政策を批判する政治的なスピーチを始めた時、ツィマーマンはこの日最後の曲となるポーランド人作曲家カロル・シマノフスキの「あるポーランド民謡の主題による変奏曲集」を演奏しようとするところだったそうです。

「私の国に手を出すな。」米国がポーランドに設置しようとしているABMシールドに関して彼はこう述べています。

一部の人たちは彼の行動を非難し不適切だと言うかも知れませんが、僕が思うに音楽家や芸術家が政治的な意見を持っている時にそれを発言するのに舞台の上程適切な機会は無いでしょうし、そうする権利があります。この場合のツィマーマンの行動はその「不適切さ」により他のどんなものよりも強烈な影響力を持っています。クラシックの演奏会では結局ほとんどの人が政治の事を考えたくは無いのですから。

NO TO NATO.

The 2 days NATO summit and their 60th anniversary celebrations in Baden-Baden and Kehl, Germany, and in Strasbourg, France came to end. France has fully reintegrated into NATO’s military command after more than 40 years of absence. New admission of Albania and Croatia to the alliance is approved and 5,000 more troops will be sent to Afghanistan under NATO command.

But why does it still exist? The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1949 on purpose of protection of west europe from the Soviet threat in cold war. After the demise of the USSR, NATO should have lost its original purpose. However it still exits and is even expanding its opperation under the U.S. domination both territorially and quantitatively. Because of complete domination of the U.S. in NATO, it functions now only as a cover of justification of expansion of the U.S. military affairs in europe and the world. Without any pretext it has to be dissolved immediately.

2日間にわたるNATOサミットと60周年記念式典は幕を閉じました。フランスは40年以上ぶりにNATOの軍事機構に完全復帰し、アルバニアとクロアチアの新規加盟は承認され、NATOの指揮の下に五千人の兵士がアフガニスタンに派遣される事となります。

しかしその存在意義はあるのでしょうか？北大西洋条約機構は1949年に冷戦におけるソ連の脅威から西欧を守る為に創設されました。ソ連が崩壊してからはその本来の目的を失ったはずです。しかしこの同盟は現在でも存在し続け、それどころか地域的にも量的にもその活動の幅を拡大しています。NATOにおけるアメリカの実効支配は、NATOの活動をアメリカの軍事行動をヨーロッパひいては世界全体に拡張するための正当化の名分としか機能させていません。口実無しにすぐに解散するべきです。

Chelsea visits Havana.

Havana’s Museo De Bellas Artes launches the first major US contemporary art exhibition to be shown in Cuba for almost a quarter of a century.

The exhibition is called ”Chelsea visits Havana” and features about 30 artists from galleries in New York’s arty Chelsea neighbourhood.

The show’s American curator Alberto Magnan had to wait for new presidents in both countries for the idea to come to fruition. Now they are trying to take a group of Cuban artists to exhibit their works in the US. They may confront a much tougher test for the realization but it does help to thaw the relationship of the two countries.

ハバナにあるMuseo De Bellas Artesでは現在、キューバではほぼ四半世紀ぶりとなる大規模なアメリカ現代美術の展覧会が開催されているそうです。

「チェルシーがハバナへ」と題されたこの展覧会では、ニューヨークのアート地区チェルシーのギャラリーより約30名の作家達が参加しています。

この展覧会のアメリカ人キュレイターAlberto Magnanは展覧会の実現の為に両国の主導者が変わるまで約2年間も待たなければなりませんでした。そして彼らは現在、アメリカ国内でキューバ人アーティストの展覧会を開催する計画を立てているそうです。実現へ向けてより厳しい難関に直面するかもしれませんが、2国間の関係性をほぐす手助けとなる事は確かだと思います。

Overseas Contingency Operation.

Although it doesn’t make any differences, the Obama administration avoids using the term ‘Global War on Terror’ and prefers using the term ‘Overseas Contingency Operation’ instead, tells an article from Washington post. On friday President Barack Obama outlined what he called a “comprehensive, new strategy” for Afghanistan and Pakistan to fight al Qaeda. 4,000 U.S. troops will be sent in addition to the 17,000 combat troops that he approved for deployment last month, bringing total U.S. military forces there to some 60,000 by the end of the summer.

Terrorists could be defeated by massive military forces, but terror will never vanish as long as the US government keep participating in it.

どちらも大して変わりは無いのですが、ワシントンポストの記事によるとオバマ政権は「反テロ戦争」という語よりも「海外緊急活動」という語の方を好むようです。今週金曜日にオバマ大統領はアフガニスタンとパキスタンのアルカイダに対抗する為のいわゆる「包括的新戦略」を発表しました。それによると先月正式に投入が承認された1万7千人の兵士に加えてさらに4千人が送り込まれ、今夏の終わりまでに合計6万人のアメリカ兵が現地へ派遣される見通しです。

テロリストは軍事力で制圧できるかもしれませんが、米政府が介入を続ける限りテロの恐怖を無くす事は決して出来ません。

Mexican drug war.

Mexican drug cartel's main areas of influence.

Anti drug operation is getting more woeful in mexico. Mexican authorities say over 6,000 people were killed in drug-related violence last year. The most obvious contradiction about this war is the fact that drug lords are getting weapons from the US thorough traficking drugs to the US and on the government side at the same time mexican military is suported by the US government as well. The criminals can’t get guns in Mexico because the gun laws in Mexico don’t allow a vast unregulated gun market where many kind of military-style weapons are available. 

President Obama laid out the new plan at his press conference yesterday. It would send more money, technology and manpower to secure the United States-Mexico border and bolster the Mexican government’s anti-drug operation. Secretary Hillary Clinton visited mexico today and stated that she feels very strongly they have a co-responsibility.

Drug related crimes must be eradicated, that’s no question. However when the authorities use military forces in such a large scale towards people, human rights of civilians, especially minorities, can be easily disregarded. In this case immigrants in the US and organizations of indigenous peoples in mexico who are conflicting politically with the mexican government. Say in other words, the operation should not be abused as a cover to overwhelm them. That shouldn’t happen, is already happening though.

We, as member of  international society,  have to keep an eye on the social situation in mexico and the US from view point of humanity .

メキシコでの反薬物作戦は酷くなるばかりです。メキシコ当局によると昨年だけで6,000人以上が薬物に関する暴力事件で殺害されています。この戦争の最も明らかな矛盾点は、マフィア達は薬物をアメリカに密輸する事によって得た資金を元にアメリカで武器を入手し、それと同時にメキシコ軍もアメリカ政府からの援助を受けているという事実です。様々な種類の軍事用兵器を大量に得られる武器の闇市場がメキシコでは許されていません。

オバマ大統領は昨夜の記者会見で反薬物作戦における新計画を発表し、それによるとアメリカ政府はアメリカとメキシコの国境警備とメキシコ政府の反薬物作戦に資金と技術、それに人材を大幅に投入する模様です。クリントン長官は本日メキシコを訪問し、アメリカの強い共同責任の意を表明しました。

薬物犯罪は撲滅されなければなりませんし、そこに疑問の余地はありません。しかしながら、政府による国民に対する大規模な軍事作戦においては一般市民（特に少数派）の人権というものが簡単に軽視され得ます。この件に関していえばアメリカ側では移民達、そしてメキシコ側ではメキシコ政府と政治的に対立してきた数々の先住民の組織です。違う言い方をするならば、この軍事作戦が彼らを制圧する為の隠れ蓑に乱用されるような事は決して起こってはなりません。もう起きてはいるのですが。

私達国際社会は人道的観点からメキシコとアメリカの社会状況を見張っている必要があります。
