Examination of media criticism.

Just a small note to keep the topic on my mind.

At the moment, I’m studying fine arts at an art university. The reason why I’m doing art, at least now, is that I believe art has the possibility to make us to think “spontaneously”. I’m not talking about the contents which art works mediate. Not about beauty of creation, expression of personal imagination nor didactic dogma. I believe not confidently in so called fine arts but in possibilities art has which are not yet realised or recognised.

In various domain including the fine arts there are alot of things that make me to think and they are highly incentive but I always ask myself if it’s my spontaneous thought. Of course not, I’m certainly influenced by them and I believe they’re good influences and helping me to construct autonomous thought.

That is, however, not my intention to influence people through the contents of my works, but only through experiences that only art can provide, so that people can get more spontaneous thoughts. You may argue that if one does provide something to people, this is not spontaneous action from them at all. Yes you’re right and in fact we’re necessarily forced to watch art in some ways. That’s a paradox which still remains to me to solve. But I think somewhere in this paradox I’ll find a path to the new form of art which is never shown.

On the other hand, there are plenty of things which make us not to think and I’m resisting them. Critisism towards images is basic idea of my art activity. It’s a kind of “Media” criticism but not “Mass media” criticism, although, of course, Mass media and it’s manipulation must be always questioned and criticized. Images, no matter if it’s photographies, films or videos, own mighty strength to make us to think that we see the reality itself, although they are only slight reprensentation of reality. I’m not negating media itself. Images support us to see and underatand reality that we can never see with our own eyes. Neverthless they can never show us reality.

Basically there must be always and necessarily manipulation occuring when an image is captured. No matter if it’s intentional or not. We should know it through our own experiences of taking pictures. But somehow we’ve been adopted to see images which are taken by others, say professionals, as neutral reflection of reality. In this sense I say a image is not identical with reality. 

So the problems of media are both sides. One in mass media which tend to control and manipulate images and consent of people, another in ourselves as passive viewer of images. If alternative media and its journalists are trying to reveal the former, I’d say I take the latter.

It’s a heavy task to change ”spontaneously not didactically” our passive attitude and habit of perception towards images, but it’s I believe worth to try and it must be changed to built more spontaneous and autonomic society.

忘れないようにするちょっとした覚え書きです。

僕は現在とある芸術大学で現代美術の勉強をしています。芸術をやっている理由は、今のところはですが、芸術は私達を「自発的に」考えさせる可能性を持っているからだと思うからです。芸術が媒介する内容の事を言っている訳ではありませんし創造の美や個人の想像力の表現、ましてや教示的な教えについて言っている訳でもありません。いわゆる現代美術を確信的に信じている訳ではありませんが芸術の持つ、まだ実現もしくは認識されていない可能性は信じています。

現代美術を含む様々な分野の中に考えさせてくれる物事がありそれらは本当に刺激的ですが、これは自発的な自らの考えなのだろうかといつも自問します。もちろん違います、僕はそれらから確実に影響を受けていて、良い影響だと思いますし自発的な思考を形成する手助けもしてくれます。

しかしながら、作品の内容を通して人々に影響を与える事は僕のやろうとしている事ではなく、人々がもっと自発的な思考を得られる事の出来るような、芸術だけが提供することのできる経験を通してなのです。もし誰かが人々に何かを提供するんだとしたら、それは人々からの自発的な行動では全く無いじゃないかと思うかもしれません。その通りです、実際に私達は芸術を観る時には何らかの形で強制されています。これは僕がまだ乗り越えなければならないパラドックスです。しかしこの逆説の中にこそ今は見えぬ新たな芸術の形への道を見つける事が出来るんじゃないかと考えています。

一方で私達を考えなくさせる沢山の物事があり、僕はそれらに抵抗しています。イメージ（写真、映像）に対する批判が僕の芸術活動の基礎理念です。「メディア批判」の一つですが「マスメディア批判」ではありません、もちろんマスメディアとその情報操作は常に疑問視、批判されなければならないのではあるのですが。写真であれ映像であれイメージというものは、ただの現実の描写に過ぎないのですが、私達に現実そのものを見ていると思わせる非常に強い力を持っています。メディア自体を否定している訳ではありません、イメージは私達が決して自らの目で見る事の出来ない現実を見、そして理解する手助けをしてくれるのですから。とはいえイメージは決して現実それ自体ではあり得ません。

ある画像なり映像なりが撮影される時、それが意図的なものであろうがなかろうが、そこには必然的に情報操作が発生します。私達は自らの撮影経験を通してその事を知っているはずなのですが、他の人によって（プロによってと言った方が良いでしょうか）撮影されたイメージはなぜか現実を中立的に映したものとして見てしまうようです。こういう意味でイメージは現実と同一ではないという事です。

メディアの問題点は両サイドにあります。一つはイメージや世論のコントロールまたは情報操作を行うマスメディア。もう一つはイメージの受動的な視聴者としての私達自身の中にです。もしオルタナティヴ・メディアやそのジャーナリスト達が前者の問題を暴こうとしているのなら、僕の暴こうとしているのは後者です。

私達の受動的な姿勢やイメージに対する認識習慣を「教訓的にではなく自発的に」変える事は非常に困難な試練ではあるのですが、それだけの価値はありますし、自発的で自律した社会をつくっていく為にも変えていかなければなりません。

Chelsea visits Havana.

Havana’s Museo De Bellas Artes launches the first major US contemporary art exhibition to be shown in Cuba for almost a quarter of a century.

The exhibition is called ”Chelsea visits Havana” and features about 30 artists from galleries in New York’s arty Chelsea neighbourhood.

The show’s American curator Alberto Magnan had to wait for new presidents in both countries for the idea to come to fruition. Now they are trying to take a group of Cuban artists to exhibit their works in the US. They may confront a much tougher test for the realization but it does help to thaw the relationship of the two countries.

ハバナにあるMuseo De Bellas Artesでは現在、キューバではほぼ四半世紀ぶりとなる大規模なアメリカ現代美術の展覧会が開催されているそうです。

「チェルシーがハバナへ」と題されたこの展覧会では、ニューヨークのアート地区チェルシーのギャラリーより約30名の作家達が参加しています。

この展覧会のアメリカ人キュレイターAlberto Magnanは展覧会の実現の為に両国の主導者が変わるまで約2年間も待たなければなりませんでした。そして彼らは現在、アメリカ国内でキューバ人アーティストの展覧会を開催する計画を立てているそうです。実現へ向けてより厳しい難関に直面するかもしれませんが、2国間の関係性をほぐす手助けとなる事は確かだと思います。

Overseas Contingency Operation.

Although it doesn’t make any differences, the Obama administration avoids using the term ‘Global War on Terror’ and prefers using the term ‘Overseas Contingency Operation’ instead, tells an article from Washington post. On friday President Barack Obama outlined what he called a “comprehensive, new strategy” for Afghanistan and Pakistan to fight al Qaeda. 4,000 U.S. troops will be sent in addition to the 17,000 combat troops that he approved for deployment last month, bringing total U.S. military forces there to some 60,000 by the end of the summer.

Terrorists could be defeated by massive military forces, but terror will never vanish as long as the US government keep participating in it.

どちらも大して変わりは無いのですが、ワシントンポストの記事によるとオバマ政権は「反テロ戦争」という語よりも「海外緊急活動」という語の方を好むようです。今週金曜日にオバマ大統領はアフガニスタンとパキスタンのアルカイダに対抗する為のいわゆる「包括的新戦略」を発表しました。それによると先月正式に投入が承認された1万7千人の兵士に加えてさらに4千人が送り込まれ、今夏の終わりまでに合計6万人のアメリカ兵が現地へ派遣される見通しです。

テロリストは軍事力で制圧できるかもしれませんが、米政府が介入を続ける限りテロの恐怖を無くす事は決して出来ません。

Earth hour 2009.

A night on the earth.

Tonight on 28 March 2009, WWF hold a international campaign “Earth Hour 2009” to urge the world to save energy and stop global warming. More than 50 million people will switch off their lights from 8:30 pm for an hour globaly. It’s not bad idea at all to spend some hours or even whole night only with candle, is it?

Only few japananese cities have endorsed the event officially. As citizen of one of the nations which consumes electricity the most as you see on the map below, we should feel responsible and in fact we are responsible for climate change of this planet.

WWFが地球温暖化の防止を呼びかける国際的なキャンペーン「Earth Hour 2009」が本日2009年3月28日に実施されます。これは午後8時30分から照明を切り、省エネルギーと温暖化防止の重要性を訴えるイベントで、世界では5000万人以上の参加が予定されています。今夜だけ数時間ろうそくの灯りだけで過ごしてみるのも悪く無いのではないでしょうか。

公式にこのイベントへの参加を表明している日本の都市は多くありません。上の地図でも分かるように電力消費量が世界でも有数の国の国民として、僕たちはもっとこの惑星の温暖化に対して責任を感じるべきでしょう。
