Fairtrade Town.

According to an article from Sueddeutch Zeitung dated today, a german city Saarbrücken has became the first “Fairtrade Town” in Germany this week. There are 60 shops in the city, where you can buy fair trade products from over the world. On April 2001 Garstang in northwest England has became the world’s first fairtrade town. Since then about 400 areas in the U.K. and 600 in 18 countries worldwide have been approved their status by the Fairtrade foundation.

A Fairtrade Town is a town, city, village, county, zone, island or borough that has made a commitment to supporting Fairtrade and using products with the FAIRTRADE Mark. Any area can work towards Fairtrade status and everyone needs to be involved. Community organisations, faith groups, businesses, schools and individuals all contribute to making their area a Fairtrade Town by pledging to do what they can to support Fairtrade and promote the FAIRTRADE Mark.

As far as I know there are no areas with Fairtrade town status in Japan yet, and only few are actually working for it. What a shame really,  it’s one of the few and valuable opportunities especially for small local government to take part in such a global movement. Kochi, my japanese small home town, should go for it.

本日付けのSueddeutch Zeitungの記事によると今週、ドイツのザールブリュッケンがドイツ国内では初めての「フェアトレード・タウン」に認定されたそうです。市内には世界中からのフェアトレード製品を取り扱う60の店舗があります。2001年4月にイギリス北西部の町ガースタングが世界で初めてのフェアトレード・タウンに認定され、それ以来イギリス国内では400の地域が、世界中では18ヶ国400の地域がフェアトレード協会よりその地位を認定されています。

フェアトレード・タウンとはフェアトレードへの支援を約束し、フェアトレード・マークのついた製品の普及に力を入れている県や市町村の事です。世界中どんな地域でも申請する事ができ、その為には全ての住人が関係しなければなりません。地方自治体、企業、学校や個人が協力してフェアトレード活動の普及の為に何が出来るかを公約する事で、その地域をフェアトレード・タウンにする為の活動に貢献する事が出来ます。

僕が知っている限り日本にはフェアトレード・タウンはまだありませんし、申請活動を行っている町も数えるほどしかありません。とても残念な事です、特に小さな地方自治体にとっては世界的な取り組みに参加できる数少ない貴重なチャンスだと思うのですが。高知でなんとかできませんかね？
